The National Infrastructure Institute Center for Infrastructure Expertise (NI2CIE) contracted PeopleGIS to design, develop, and implement an Internet-based
assessment tool focused on the prevention, mitigation, and management of risks associated with
school facility preparedness. This School Multi-hazard Assessment Resource Tool (SMART)
was designed to support teams of school and public safety professionals who have been
assigned with the responsibility of planning for their school's safety.
Five modules have already been programmed into SMART, including:
the fact that such a process is not always about the answers, but about the questions. Many do
not even know what questions to ask themselves, and therefore progress is limited. SMART provides
this level of guidance without reaching conclusions. Conclusions are left up to your team.
SMART will allow your team to assess how prepared you are to deal with Violence in your school, a Fire, Arson, Intrusion, and other Emergencies. Soon, other modules will help you to assess preparedness for Sexual Violence, Bombs & Bomb Threats. A module is also coming to help you prepare table top and walk- through exercises. The idea is to be prepared. SMART is the tool to show how prepared you are.
NI2 is working with many partners on the continued development of SMART, including several schools and national associations:
